The Department of Business Management at the University of Pretoria is seated in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. It is well established and recognised as one of the leaders in business management and entrepreneurship in South Africa. The department has three focus areas, offering three specialist undergraduate degrees:
- Management, strategy and leadership (B.Com in Business Management)
- Entrepreneurship (B.Com in Entrepreneurship)
- Supply chain management (B.Com with option in supply chain management)
The department added to this offering contemporary management issues such as diversity, innovation, environment management, corporate governance and e-business to its offering, with strategy and leadership. These issues meet the need of trade in industry and general. Skills such as presentation, problem identification and solving and negotiation are also developed through class participation. The HIV/Aids endemic and impact are discussed in topics such as human resource management and strategy.
The chair in entrepreneurship was established in the early 1980s. The first B-degree in entrepreneurship in South Africa was offered by this department in 1999. Entrepreneurship was introduced as a core subject on first year level for most B.Com degrees in at the University of Pretoria since 2007.
The department is generally accepted as the leader in entrepreneurship education in South Africa. Most of the staff lecturing in entrepreneurship at other universities are alumni of this department.
The B.Com, MPhil and PhD programmes in entrepreneurship were the first of their kind offered in South Africa

Menisha Moos – B. Comm.; B. Comm. (Hons.); M. Comm. (University of the Western Cape)
Menisha Moos is a lecturer in business management and entrepreneurship in the Department of Business Management at the University of Pretoria. She is busy with her doctorate on small business and entrepreneurship policy. She has published chapters in textbooks and delivered papers at national and international conferences. Her research interests focus on entrepreneurship education, the small business enabling environment and entrepreneurship policy.
Retha Strydom – B.A.; HED (University of the Free State); Business Management & Administration (Hons); MBA (University of Stellenbosch).
Retha Strydom is a lecturer in business management and entrepreneurship in the Department of Business Management at the University of Pretoria. She has contributed to chapters in textbooks and delivered papers at national and international conferences. She received a Laureate award for innovative teaching in 2008. Her research interests focus on entrepreneurship education, social entrepreneurship, the role of creative art and craft in social development and facilitating start-ups.
